We’ve updated our privacy practices to ensure full GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) compliance. In this post, we explain what GDPR is, why it matters, and how Watch Later Button protects your data.
What is GDPR?
GDPR is a European privacy law that took effect in 2018. It requires websites and services to be transparent about what data they collect, how they use it, and gives users control over their personal information.
Even though GDPR is a European regulation, it applies to any website or service processing data from EU residents. Since our servers are in Germany, we comply with GDPR standards for all users worldwide.
Key GDPR Principles
GDPR is built on these core principles:
- Transparency – We tell you exactly what data we collect
- Purpose Limitation – We only use data for stated purposes
- Data Minimization – We collect only what we need
- Integrity and Confidentiality – We keep your data secure
- User Rights – You control your own data
How Watch Later Button Complies with GDPR
The Extension Itself
The Watch Later Button browser extension does not collect any personal data. Period.
- ❌ No tracking of your browsing history
- ❌ No storage of your Watch Later list
- ❌ No uploads to our servers
- ✅ Everything happens locally in your browser
- ✅ Communication only with YouTube’s official services
Our Website
Our website (watchlater.alxple.com) uses Umami Analytics, a privacy-focused analytics tool. Here’s what makes it GDPR compliant:
Self-Hosted & Under Our Control
Umami runs on our own servers at uptime.alxple.com. This means:
- ✅ Your analytics data never leaves our infrastructure
- ✅ No third-party companies have access to your data
- ✅ We have complete control over data retention and deletion
- ✅ No integration with advertising networks
What Umami Collects
When you visit our website, Umami records:
- Which pages you view
- Your device type (desktop/mobile)
- Browser information
- Approximate location (country level)
- Interaction events (button clicks)
What it doesn’t do:
- ❌ No individual user tracking
- ❌ No persistent cookies
- ❌ No IP address storage (hashed and discarded)
- ❌ No behavioral profiling
- ❌ No retargeting or advertising
Data Retention
Analytics data is automatically deleted after 90 days. After that period, it’s permanently removed from our servers.
Your Control
You can opt out of analytics collection:
- Use Do Not Track (DNT) – Enable it in your browser settings and Umami will respect it
- Browser Extensions – Use privacy-focused extensions to block analytics scripts
- Contact Us – Email us if you have concerns about data collection
Our Transparency Commitments
We’ve published detailed legal documents to ensure complete transparency:
Privacy Policy
Our Privacy Policy explains:
- What data we collect (extension vs. website)
- How we use analytics data
- Your rights under GDPR
- How to opt out or exercise data subject rights
- Contact information for privacy inquiries
Legal Notice (Impressum)
Our Impressum (required by German law) provides:
- Contact information
- Copyright and liability information
- Dispute resolution information
- Data controller details
Why Privacy Matters
In 2026, privacy is more important than ever. We believe:
- Your data is yours – We should never control your personal information
- Transparency builds trust – You deserve to know what’s happening with your data
- Minimal collection – The less data collected, the less risk
- Open development – Our code is open source on GitHub
What This Means for You
✅ Your extension usage is completely private – We have no visibility into what videos you save
✅ Your website visits are anonymized – We see aggregate statistics, not individual tracking
✅ You have legal rights – Under GDPR, you can request access to, deletion of, or correction of any data
✅ You can opt out – Use DNT or contact us to disable analytics
